What It Is: COROLLARY takes place in a universe where twins are an immutable physical law. If your twin dies, you die. So how did plucky space captain Andromeda survive the death of her twin? The whole galaxy is after her to find out.

The Good: This book is beautiful, retro-cool sci-fi. Ahmed’s art is like Bruce Timm colored by Jamie Hewlett, a weird, wonderful combination. It’s loose and fun, while the characters and ships and gadgets remain on model. Ahmed colors his own bold ink line with a vibrancy that meshes perfectly. When Metzler takes over for the fourth chapter, nothing misses a beat. I can’t say enough good things about these colors. They leap off of the page and worth the price of admission alone.

The premise is simple and fun in a “Why didn’t I think of this?” kind of way. The book adheres to its own internal story logic, as it continues to expand and broaden its world and cast of characters. This may be a miniseries, but it feels like you’ve dipped your toes into the middle of an ongoing, epic, long-running comic series. Your mind marvels at larger universe full of stories waiting to be discovered.

The Bad: The throw everything at the wall and see what sticks (including the kitchen sink) approach serves the art better than the story, but it’s a minor quibble. The first chapter is rock-solid, while the remaining three can seem as if you’re meeting characters and learning plot twists as the writer thinks of them. It gives the whole book an unplanned, organic feel, not the worst thing for a story like this. If you let the story zigzag you around the galaxy, you’ll enjoy the ride.

The everything has a twin premise is unique fun but can also be confusing if you’re trying to keep all the characters straight from panel to panel and page to page.
